Or the Zen of Running a Small Company.
The beauty of working for a company is that you often get put into a little role and you do your job, and you get really good at it, and you know what to expect everyday. That can be a good thing. The beauty of owning your own company is that you have to do everything, regardless if you are particularly interested or talented in what you need to get done. Today, I had to reconcile our checking accounts, pay bills, forecast income, talk to the bank, basically all number stuff. I am still scratching the rash it gave me. However, it is finished and I promised myself 15 minutes of blogging time before I get my hair cut. (The other beauty of owning your own company is that you can leave in the middle of the day to get your haircut, without having to let anyone know!)
A couple of days ago I was feeling the urge to write about customer service, which I will touch on later, but I'd really like to share a conversation I had with the "creative guy" at a local advertising agency. He had looked at our website (http://www.solmatesreaders.com/) and shared his thoughts about it, which were ambivalent, and he and I tried to discuss the issue of aging in advertising. He seems to think that it is not good to show people who actually look their age because it reminds the viewer that they, too, look old. Hmmm.
Another thing that Creative Guy said was "The older we get, the more different we are.", which at the time I thought was really profound. Let's roll that one around in our brains for a minute...The Older We Get, the More Different (Than What) We Are." Than we used to be? Than we are from each other? Than we are from a twenty-something? If so, Vive La Difference! I hope to get more clarification on this when we meet.
He also said, "Your site includes book reviews of books that most people don't read, they are almost like, uh, literature...." I am pretty sure that our site contains mostly best-sellers and one self help book. Call me an egg head, but it ain't literature. He also said, "People don't read anymore."
So shoot, I'm going to stop writing.
